Task page should be for organizing unfinished tasks. Nothing else.

If the poll results in "No", we can make a fine grained poll to what else should be listed.

from the page:

Licho: lol, do you really want to list all tickets here??? Because more active devs fixed hundreds of them or fixed stuff without creating tickets.. Some tickets are also one line tweaks while others multi-day efforts. Focus on higher level stuff, don't attempt to make a ladder because you cannot measure it.

SirMaverick: Why did you introduce a hall of fame anyway? This side should be about coordination of pending tasks. If someone wants to see what someone has done he can look up the changelog. If you still want to keep that, it should be about all task ever done, else it's incomplete and useless.

Licho: I wanted to list tasks which were assigned and completed by people. Or tasks that were assigned but never completed by them. Basically mainly hall of shame for never completed tasks. It was never meant to list all minor things that anyone does or list things that were never assigned through task system (like tickets). Most tickets are too small and deal with bugs, tasks should be bigger in scope. I dont like it myself, but i thought it could improve work morale. But if you start making ladders then its very bad, because you cannot compare effort needed to fix various tickets. You will get what you measure. Also its very bad to make it retroactive and include just some random subset of our thousands of tickets in the list..

I just wanted list of completed and failed tasks from the task system only. But anyway do what you want im out.

Or tasks that were assigned but never completed by them.

In this case I would remove my assignment and move it back to available tasks.

Basically mainly hall of shame for never completed tasks.

It's not shame if you had 2 tasks, only have time to work on 1 and retreat from the second task.

But if you start making ladders then its very bad, because you cannot compare effort needed to fix various tickets.

+1, that's why I think any listing of completed tasks/tickets is useless. To see the effort look at changelog.

And still any listing of completed tasks/tickets does not help working/fixing pending tasks.

The ticket system is good, we should use it more and assign more tickets. So im sort of moving the task assignment system over into the ticket system.

This isnt a 'Greatest CA dev of All Time' its 'CA DEV CHALLENGE ROUND ONE!'. Its just a bit of lol to motivate people to use the ticket system. Close a ticket, get a gold star. It doesnt mean anything.

Encouragement, collaboration and competition is best for morale, not discouragement and shame.

I'm okay with that. The task page should still coordinate the big tasks (which might be composed of several tickets).

Finished tickets on task page are useless, duplicate information. Adding finished tasks will also spam changelog (we already see, when tickets are closed).

Maybe make a hall of fame page. It clutters the task page a bit.

And a task is never really failed unless someone says it is, otherwise it's ongoing.

Ticket system wasnt working, thats why i created those tasks.

Also ticket system does not prioritize, tasks were supposed to guide and prioritize development.

Hall of fame is useless because you will get what you measure - if you measure number of tickets well you will get pointless tickets and "fixes" of pointless tickets.

Task system was supposed to deal with higher level tasks than simple tickets and it was supposed to be one place with SHORT list of tasks so that even people who dont read tickets see what needs to be done.

There are hundreds of tickets and many of them years old, ticket system was never working well!

There are even technical obstacles:

  • searching and ticket listing is extremely slow
  • it does not remember login for me

"ima vote against sak as leader because he declared himself leader at 50%, gloated about it, then, as his first act, reopened a whole ton of random polls" (some of this was google, though, sorry for the confusion)

Honestly Licho i thought you'd be glad that im being proactive and trying to use the system you set up to get some stuff done.

Ive revised the Tasks 'star' system so you earn then for specific tickets.

+1 for less duplicate information. Only Super important tasks should go in that page. No more than 1 or 2 per dev.

And tickets can have priority. The problem is 95% of them are set to Major. Assign tickets more and you can see who is responsible for what.

Changed 2 years ago by SirMaverick

Also Star milestones are imo useless. If you want to encourage ticket system define milestones for tasks. I can't really get an overview, when there are tickets for 1 task spread around the star milestones. E.g. a "finish gui" milestone that collects all tickets for chili would be more useful.

This way we could completely get rid of the Task page and do everything with the ticket system.

I was just trying to use the system Licho put in place to spur on development, and here you guys are all worried about 'effeciency' and stuff. Blur.

You are, of course, right (esp about the milestones).
