Its a neat toy, but i dont think its going to work long term as a replacement for the build menu.

It was made and designed for it. It has benefits of nested buildmenu, saves space and is the fastest way (except direct keyboard shortcuts).

It might be too confusing for newbs, I think the normal menu should be default and leave gestures for advanced users.

I think a tangible menu that can be clicked on is simpler for noobs to understand. Also gesture might be accidentally set off. Accidentally causing something to appear and not knowing how to get rid of it is very annoying.

confusing?? Default menu is confusing.

It was created to prevent confusion from having 50+ unsorted items in huge ugly table.

It does not accidentally set off anymore.

I didnt spend week of work on making stuff that has to be deleted and replaced by something else. Because default menu is horrible and we agreed to replace it..

If you disagreed with concept itself you should have commmented when it was published in gui plan thread.

Oh, well it sounds ok. I haven't actually used either default or gesture is a while.

I only watch the CA trac, when i can, and i dont read all the threads. I did comment as soon as i saw it, saying its not good for noobs.

You cant come up with a pet project and expect it to become the default, its like the resource bar again: This isnt helping coming up with a final GUI. These are experiments and toys.

Hey, im all for it, all for the experimentation and pet projects. But i dont think it will make a good default menu.

Changed 2 years ago by licho

Wtf it isnt a pet project, I spent 2 days just reading research appers on GUI.

Its not some sort of experiment. It was always meant as a replacement.

What makes you think its worse for nubs?? Do you know what was actual nubs 1st complain? The MENU.

Old one. Its horrible and uber confusing, you are just used to it.

Circle menus are far from new:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_menu

Honestly, going by the trends, menus like this are going to be the way of future gaming. Its easy for newbies to learn, its efficient for pros.

The only people who are going to have trouble with it are spring players who expect everything they play to be ba. Or maybe who have their own custom interface they want to use.

Maybe when someone is starting up ca for the first time, there could be an option to chose between the springui and ca's new gui. That way experienced spring players would still be in their comfort zone and new players could take advantage of what ca has to offer.

Saktoth, you're being unfair. It's not a toy. We had lengthy discussions over a period of weeks in the CA subforum about the future of the menu. We concluded that the menu needs to be categorized/nested because spring's paged menu is no good for CA (even if one has very high resolution and manages to reduce their menu to only 2 pages, it still is a mess to look through). Licho didn't create it as a random pet project but as the culmination of our conclusion in that discussion. (Contrast this to crudemenu which I created purely as a pet project out of my own ideas and am not forcing on anyone, but I feel that on-the-fly tooltips are another great way to save space and make life easier on the user's eyes. My personal opinion only.)

Yes, I am for the allowing of veteran spring users to go back to using the spring's default if that's what they want (by flicking a few switches). There's no point in hurting their interests. But for new people we have designed a new ui that is appropriate for CA and this is it.

Deleted midknight's "both" option which makes no sense. There can be only one default obviously. You can always switch to normal menu and atm we indeed do have both until commandmenu is replaced as well.

Its the standard in RTS to have a range of buttons for build options.

It also operates like any graphics editing package, you have a range of tools down the side that change the behaviour of the cursor. Its very intuitive.

I spent ages working on the story, discussing it, trying to incorporate peoples objections, etc. I got overruled. Same with art stuff, all the concept art work i did with my brother has been for nothing, nobody follows it. Prior effort hasnt determined what we end up using before.
